Considered to be the “Joker” in the deck when it comes to the world of automotive art, sculptor Bernardo Corman creates work so vastly different than anything else out there that he’s practically a genre unto himself: Pop-Surreal Automotive Bronzes. The New Jersey based artist designs three-dimensional works reminiscent of the Kustom Kulture movement that was born out of Southern California’s hot rod culture during the mid to late 20th century. Infusing his love for custom built cars with the visual metaphors of surrealism, Corman has been described as a cross between Salvador Dali and Big Daddy Roth, Rene Magritte and Von Dutch. By pairing man-made engineering with natural elements, Corman’s clever juxtapositions compliment rather than oppose one another. “I strive to find the natural beauty inherent in each form and reveal a relationship,” says Corman. “In hindsight, it seems almost obvious in each example.”
